Notice what changes when the door is open

Without forcing anything, compare how the handle and key feel with the door open and closed. If the mechanism moves freely while open but binds when closed, alignment is a likely part of the problem.

02

Look for early warning signs

Problems often build gradually. Catching, draughts, a handle that needs extra force and a key that only turns while the door is pulled are all worth addressing.

  • The door rubs the frame
  • The handle does not lift smoothly
  • Locking points miss their keeps
  • The key is stiff only when the door is closed
03

Do not keep forcing the handle

Extra force loads the internal gearbox and linkages. An adjustment job can become a failed mechanism if the symptom is ignored for too long.

04

Adjustment or parts?

A careful inspection checks hinges, frame, keeps, cylinder, handles and the multipoint mechanism. The right repair may involve adjustment, a focused replacement part or a complete mechanism.
